Quilt Board
A quilt board is one of the simplest and most effective ways to help your bees survive the winter.
Many beekeepers think cold temperatures are the biggest threat to wintering bees, but moisture is often the greater danger. As bees cluster together, they generate heat and moisture. When that moisture condenses on the cold inner cover, it can drip back onto the cluster, chilling the bees.
A quilt board helps solve this problem by providing a place for moisture to be absorbed before it can return to the hive.
Our quilt boards are built from a 3-inch wooden super with a screened bottom. The screen is lined with burlap and filled with untreated wood shavings, allowing warm, moist air to rise through the screen while the wood shavings absorb excess condensation. The quilt board also provides an additional layer of insulation above the colony.
For the best winter protection, the quilt board is installed directly above a candy board, creating a system that provides emergency food, moisture control, and added insulation throughout the winter months.

Pair It With
For maximum winter protection, we recommend using a Candy Board beneath the quilt board. Together they provide emergency food, moisture management, and insulation to help your colony successfully overwinter.
